2009 HILLMEN HIGHLIGHT REEL: A SEASON TO REMEMBER

2009 PLACER HILLMEN FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHT VIDEO: A SEASON TO REMEMBER

To say that 2009 was a year to remember would be an understatement.  The Placer Hillmen exemplified the meaning of the word “team.” They were a close knit group, a true band of brothers. Couple that with the fact that they had an immense amount of talent and it is easy to see why they were so successful. Placer went 12-2 that year,  including routes of Bear River (51-7) in week 7, Foothill (57-20), and  Calaveras (43-23 in the playoffs. Placer won a pair of thrillers beating Casa Roble (31-30) in week 3,  and downing Sonora (15-14) in the section semifinal game on a halfback touchdown pass from Dalton Dyer to Cameron Southward on fourth down, followed by a two-point conversion from Asher Gotzmer. That squad also beat arch rivals Colfax (34-27) and Whitney (28-19), en rout to the school’s second consecutive section title game appearance. That year, Placer was loaded with offensive weapons. Gotzmer (1735 yds rushing, 907 yds receiving, and 34 total touchdowns) and Josh Turney (1121 yds rushing and 21 touchdowns), led a potent ground attack which ran wild on opponents all season long. The Hillmen weren’t too shabby through the air either.  QB Colin Burnett (18 touchdowns, 2151 yards passing),  and WR Cameron Southward (793 yards receiving, 8 touchdowns) turned in stellar seasons for the well rounded offensive attack. The Defense was anchored by LB Josh Klem (107 tackles), DE Mike Gray (100 tackles, 5 sacks), and DE Jarrad Weaver (5 sacks). LB Brett Lenz (96 tackles) and Caleb Mitchell (77 tackles) were also vital cogs on the defensive side of the ball.

Hillmen rout Pioneer 55-0 for first win of the season

Led by a strong ground attack and a stingy defensive effort, the Hillmen routed Pioneer 55-0 for their first win of the season. Running back Owen Scott scored on runs of 20 and 13 yards, and Logan Markstein scampered 46 yards to pay dirt and Placer jumped out to a commanding 20-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. It was more of the same in the second quarter as fullback Jared Halbert scored a pair of touchdowns, and quarterback Clark Pietromonaco connected with tight end Tyler Gums for an 18 yard scoring strike to give the Hillmen a commanding 41-0 lead. The offensive line turned in a solid performance, opening up holes for the running backs all night long.  The defense was equally as strong, holding Pioneer to just 45 yards in the first half.  Linebacker Ryan Gray had a big fumble recovery in the first half, and Ryan Huston and Corey Yunk each had an interception. Friday night was the first shutout by Placer since head coach Joey Montoya took over in 2007. The JV lost a tough one 58-36, and the Freshman picked up their first win of the season with a 50-6 victory on Thursday night. Click the link below to read more about it!

Hillmen look to bounce back against Pioneer Tonight

Following their season opening loss to Nevada Union, the Hillmen will look to bounce back against Pioneer tonight when they travel to Woodland to take on the Patriots.  Placer’s offense will look to build off of its three touchdown performance in the second half last week.  All eyes will be on the offensive line tonight as the boys up front will look to set the tone for the offensive attack.  Defensively, Michael Dowmen, and Ryan Gray and company will be in charge of shutting down the Patriots Wing-T attack which amassed 254 yards offensively in a 14-7 loss against Cordova last week. Head Coach Joey Montoya, who coached the Patriots from 2004-06 will be making his first trip back to the place where he began his head coaching career since he returned to his alma mater in 2007.  If you can’t make it to the game, tune in to 950AM KAHI to hear the action and follow us for live updates on Twitter!

Montoya, Placer seeking 3rd straight PVL title in ’14

Beginning with it’s battle with Nevada Union tonight, Placer and head coach Joey Montoya will be seeking their 3rd straight PVL title in ’14. The dawn of a new season brings with it a sense of excitement and a fresh set of challenges, but the  goal remains the same: keep the PVL banner on the Hill.  Following an undefeated league campaign in 2012, Placer followed that up with a strong performance in league play (4-1) to capture yet another championship last season. The road through the Pioneer Valley League will be a challenging one, with Bear River featuring a physical and talented team, Lincoln returning several key starters and hiring a new respected coach,  Colfax is always tough, and co-champs Center has talent once again at a few skill positions. However, lead by several returning seniors and a strong junior class,  Placer is poised to defend it’s crown in what promises to be another exciting season! Read about the 2014 season preview in today’s Auburn Journal.
