Hillmen win their third straight PVL championship with 45-21 victory over Colfax

With their 45-21 waxing of Colfax last night,  The Hillmen won their third straight PVL championship. Every championship team is unique in it’s own way. The 2014 has had to deal with it’ s fair share of adversity throughout the season, but from day one, everyone from the coaching staff has put in tireless hours in the film room and on the field week in and week out working to get better. Watching this group come together and grow as the season has progressed has been pretty awesome. Several key seniors have stepped up, and quite a few juniors have made huge contributions this year. I couldn’t be any prouder of the coaching staff and the players. They earned this banner. It is and always will be GREAT TO BE A HILLMEN! 2014 PVL CHAMPS!

Hillmen seek outright PVL title tonight against arch rival Colfax

To say there is no love lost between Placer and arch rival Colfax would be an understatement.  The two teams will renew hostilities on the gridiron Friday night, as the Hillmen (7-2, 4-0 will be seeking the PVL title outright in the final game of the regular season.  Placer, which has really kicked it into another gear since league play began five weeks ago thanks to a stout defense (6.66 PPG) and a well balanced offense (44 PPG) will look to continue their recent stretch of hot play against the Falcons as they look to end things on a high note entering the playoffs.  Colfax, coming off a win against Foothill, will be looking to spoil The Hillmen’s bid to be sole owners of the PVL championship. The intensity will undoubtedly at a fever pitch. What more could you ask for? The varsity game will kickoff at 7:30pm. The JV game starts at 5:15pm. You can  follow us for live in-game scoring updates on Twitter! You can read tonight’s game preview in the Auburn Journal by clicking the link below!

With their sights set on another league banner Friday night, the Hillmen (7-2, 4-0) made quick work of Lincoln, scoring 45 unanswered points in the first half, en route to a 52-7 victory to capture  at least a share of their third straight PVL title.  QB Clark Pietromonaco continued his strong play of late, throwing four touchdowns in the first half.  Jared Halbert scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground, and Owen Scott, Frankie O’neal, Tyler Gums, and Austin Hess were on the receiving end of Pietromonaco’s touchdown passes for Placer.  The defense which has allowed just 20 points in league play, turned in another stout performance, blanking the zebras in the first half.  The Hillmen will look to win the league title outright when they travel to Colfax to take on the Falcons, their league rivals Friday night. Hillmen look to clinch Third straight PVL Title Tonight against Lincoln

Fresh off their dominating performance against Bear River Saturday night, the Hillmen (6-2, 3-0) will look to keep the momentum going as they look to clinch their third straight PVL title tonight when they travel to Lincoln (1-7, 0-3) tonight to take on the Zebras. Placer, which has gotten off to a hot start thus far in league play, outscoring opponents 83-13,  will be facing a Lincoln squad who despite being riddled with injuries to several key players this season, has played both Colfax and Center tough in recent weeks. The Hillmen meanwhile appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. The defense which features seven junior starters is beginning to come of age. Along with posting their second shutout of the season last week, the defense held Bear River to 180 yards of total offense. On the offensive side of the ball, Placer’s well balanced attack has been impressive to watch. Through the first two PVL games, the Hillmen have averaged 273 yards per game on the ground, and 167.5 through the air. The varsity game will begin at 7:30pm. The JV game starts at 5:15pm. You can  follow us for live in-game scoring updates on Twitter! You can read tonight’s game preview in the Auburn Journal by clicking the link below.

Hillmen blank Bear River to gain inside track to third straight PVL title

For weeks we have heard about Bear River’s vaunted Jr class, but on Saturday night, it was the Hillmen who turned in their best team effort of the season, blanking Bear River 28-0 to gain the inside track to their third straight PVL title. Placer set the tone early on with their punishing, physical style of play on the defensive side of the ball and never looked back. The defense held the bruins to just 180 yards of offense en route to their second shutout of the season. The Hillmen offense was lights out as well. Clark Pietromonaco had three total TDs on the night, including a 49 yard run on a QB keeper. To read more about the victory, check out today’s story in the Auburn Journal!

Stingy Defense Key to Early Season Success for Hillmen

In years past, it has been the offense that has set the tone for Placer (2-1) to start the season. While the offense once again is putting up points to the tune of 41 points per game, it has been a stingy defense that has been key to the early season success for the Hillmen.

Following the opening season loss to Nevada Union, the defense, which features eight junior starters, has been nothing short of dominant. Placer has limited their last two opponents to 13 points, including a shutout against Pioneer two weeks ago.  The starting unit allowed just 7 of those points and just over 100 yards per contest.

Despite the youth, the defense has made huge strides and come of age quickly this season. The defensive turnaround can be attributed to more physical play and improved tackling.  DL Michael Downen (29 tackles, 1.5 sacks), leads the way, but Jacob Capra, Johnny Capra, Simeon Engle, and Tyler Gums have also played key roles up front for the Hillmen.

The LB corps has seen solid play from Brian Stangland (19 tackles, 2 TFL), Taylor Levesque (22 tackles, 1 TFL), and Josh Matthews (17 tackles, 1 TFL), and Ryan Gray (17 tackles, 2 TFL). Cole Blackwell and Logan Markstein have also made plays for this group.

In the secondary, Ryan Huston (2 INT), and Zack Madrigal (1 INT) have been solid at the corner position. At the safety position, Owen Scott has provided strong physical play for the Hillmen, and Marcus Ante, who picked off his first of the season last week against Sheldon, has showcased his athleticism on several occasions has also played well.

Placer will look to continue their early season success and keep the momentum rolling when they travel to Del Campo tonight to face Rio Americano (0-3). Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
